If I seem to have the same buzzing (non-boot) problem when I try to boot vista with the also bootable XP disc attached to the other SATA port, yet both vista & XP boot if only one of them is connected, then I have the same problem as when I connect one of the iffy discs with a bootable OS & fail to boot. It was suggested today that both iffy discs are duff, but the non-boot of either bootable OS when paired together on the two SATA ports contradicts this, dont you think?

The iffy discs were formatted using the XP install disc before, so there is no reason to suppose I wanted to salvage their data. Also, although fdisk is for preparing a new disc for formatting & managing logical partitions I thought that since I was only removing the MBR, I would do no harm, & I did not.

Hi

Well it looks as though Euro has taken his bat and ball home.  For anyone reading this thread with the same problem (well kinda problem because I am not 100% sure what Euro was trying to achieve)  If you goto the disks manufacturers website (in this case Seagate) you will usually find a utility that is able to test your drive to ensure that it is functioning correctly, return it to it's original size, do a low level format (write 0's to the entire disk) and quite often much, much more.

. .  hmm: have recently been rather appalled to find that you need to use an F6 driver [or need to get the driver into yer install CD as a textsetup jpbbie] for Intel SATA of the AHCI persuasion - same driver as their 'RAID' thingie for the ICH7/8/9 families. This faux-SCSI & firmware 'RAID' stuff is getting some way beyond what Win2000 & XP can natively handle.

. .  more reasons every day to move to Linux or if possible to OS X . . . .

Good Grief!
Will it never end?
Perhaps when our spectacles are thick as a light-house lenses,
calouses on the bum tough as hickory bark, translucent skin, withering appendages, giant brain cavities, eyes of a bush-baby on booger-sugar,6 sets of wisdom teeth(one blue);Only maybe then will technology save the planet..
 For What? The Inter-galactic Archeological Commission circa 3006 may well hail the millenium with the latest artifact from the (quote-unquote) "Computer-Age";
A terra-byte of Milly-Vanilly chisled from an ancient coprolite..

I now strike my own widget with a hammer....

Good night Mrs Calabash..Where ever you are..

I was having a few moments of reflection and for some unfathonable reason, decided to drop by for a visit -- just to see if the site was still active.

I gravitated to this post and, after reading a few replies, started laughing out loud. You are still the same group of wonderful characters that I remember filled a great deal of my free time back in the "good old days"

The unflappable Shoarthing, his uncanny patience, wit and step by step accurate solutions.

Graham, with his ability to read between the lines, has always been able to decipher what a poster is really after.

Jazzbo -- the ever present humour injected into every helpfull response.

I would love to see the rest of "the group" back here and get this forum back to the fun place it was. I kinda miss all that.....

. .  well, jolly nice to hear you too.

This is being written from a watercooled lashup running OSX Leopard . . . which may go some small way to explain the silence . . .

Howx trix on Planet Hook?
